As President of RDA we are very grateful to HRH The Princess Royal for agreeing to allow her name to be given to a new rose from David Austin Roses. We would also like to thank David Austin Roses for making a donation to RDA of £1 for each Princess Anne rose sold.
David Austin started breeding roses over 50 years ago as an amateur rose breeder. Inspired by a book on old roses, he set out to try to combine the best characteristics of the old roses with the best of the new roses, suited to the needs of the gardener, which would be outstandingly beautiful, yet very easy to prune and care for.
New this season, the Princess Anne rose was launched at Chelsea Flower show in May. It has an overall character that is very different from any other rose, having its own very special beauty yet retaining the classic full-petalled flowers of an English Rose. The young flower is deep pink, almost red, gradually fading to a pure deep pink as the bloom matures. It is remarkably resistant to disease and flowers over a long period and in large clusters; the individual blooms opening in succession. There is a Tea Rose fragrance of medium strength.
